Online learning is a convenient way of delivering lots of information. With storification you can deliver the information in a more memorable and engaging way.
Instead of simply presenting information, storification places learners inside a realistic scenario where they actively solve problems, make decisions, and experience the consequences of their choices.
Storification as a Part of Learning Design
Design learning around real work.
Storification is most effective when focusing on situations employees actually face. Rather than teaching concepts in isolation, build learning experiences around authentic and immersive workplace challenges that make new knowledge immediately relevant and applicable.
Focus on application over information.
The purpose of storification isn't to tell a good story or overwhelm the employee with information, it's to help learners apply knowledge to workplace situations. Design stories that encourage learners to solve problems, make decisions, and practice and use skills they will use on the job.
Create meaningful learning experiences.
Storification provides context that helps learners understand why a topic matters before introducing theory. This makes learning more engaging, memorable, and easier to transfer into practice.
Use storification to support broader learning initiatives.
Storification works well alongside other learning methods. Rather than replacing existing learning methods, it strengthens and reinforces information gained from other learning methods.
Practical Application of Storification
Introduce the topic with a real-life example.
Before theory, use practical real-life examples. For example, with workplace security training describe a situation where ignoring safety instructions led to an accident.
Incorporate scenarios into assignments.
Describe a situation where customer complained and ask the learner to choose or describe the right response to the situation.
Use storification to illustrate priorities. Describe a complex situation, where the employee has to prioritize different tasks and rank the tasks in the order of priority. For example, what should be prioritized in a workplace accident.
Let learners share their own stories. Ask learners to share exceptionally positive customer service experiences with one another and let the learners reflect on their experiences.
